John Allsopp gives us his thoughts on the Shark Skwal helmet after living with it for many miles.

It raises the issue of whether it's important to use our local motorcycle shops and outlets when buyng kit or is price the only consideration??

As many will remember we had the first generation of this helmet supplied to us by our friends at Bolt Bikes.  After around 50,000 miles what have we found?

Firstly, let's recall the specifications-

SHARP 4 star safety rated (out of 5)

1.47Kg (about average)

Rechargeable LED lighting strip

Injected thermoplastic shell (polycarb)

Pinlock anti-fog insert include Integral sun visor

Sizes XS – XL

On long term testing-

Ventilation on this helmet is reasonably good.  The chin vent giving more air flow than the single forehead one.

This takes air into the helmet, through the air channels around the scalp and out of the exhaust vent below the spoiler to the rear). It’s adequate and, coupled with the Pinlock, has enough ventilation to keep the visor mist-free.

The liner is removable and had remained very comfortable without any appreciable compression to affect the fit.

The helmet is also relatively quiet and certainly the wind noise is unobtrusive with ear plugs.

We have noticed that the LED's are easy to turn on accidentally but a minor adjustment of the situation of the switch soon dealt with that issue.

Overall we have been very impressed with this helmet, however, it does have an Achilles heel.

The visor has been subject to fracture on the arms of the shield.  This has happened once on the road and three times in the process of changing the visor.  We understand the issue was addressed in the generation 2 with alteration to the ratchet system.

Our friends at Bolt Bikes arranged for the helmet to be returned to the factory where the upgraded parts were fitted and the helmet returned in a week, free of charge, under the five year guarantee.  (We'd also like to mention that Bolt Bikes exchanged every failed visor free and without quibble).

Have you had any issues with visors on Shark helmets?

Also, do let us know if you didn't receive the excellent after sales service we did at Bolt Bikes.
