My AJS 125 seems to lose power when it warms up and won’t go as fast, especially when I’m trying to go uphill. What’s wrong?

I would suspect the clutch is slipping, which is why the bike won’t go any faster when you open the throttle. Do you notice the engine revs increasing but no additional speed? The first thing to check is the clutch cable adjustment – the cable needs to have at least 5 millimetres of free play. If the cable is too tight, the clutch won’t be fully engaged and will slip. If the cable adjustment is okay, the clutch itself is too worn and will need replacement. Check your engine oil. Wipe some oil onto a clean paper towel and look at its condition. If the oil is black and gritty with a smell of burnt bacon; that would suggest a burned out clutch due to slipping.
Can you tell me where I can learn to ride a bike quickly? I’ve met this fantastic girl who is really into MotoGP and I tried to impress her by boasting of all the different bikes I’ve owned and the adventures I’ve had. It worked, but now she wants me to take her out for a ride and I’ve run out of excuses. She already suspects and is going to find out I made it all up if I don’t arrange something soon – help!

I can understand how easy it is to exaggerate a little when courting – boasting about being a biker is the human equivalent of being a dominant Alpha male with large horns or impressive plumage. Problem is, you’re not born with the ability to ride and experience takes time, as well as all the stupid testing the government now makes us do. I would suggest being honest and come clean about your deception and hope she's not just after you for your biking ability. Failing that, do an intensive DAS course and hope you’re a fast learner!
