A Belgian Biking Weekend

It seemed like a good excuse on which to hang a weekend away on the bikes. The last round of the No Budget Cup (as reported in the last issue) was on Monday 29th September at Zolder. Wouldn’t it be nice if our brave No Budgeteers had an army of fans packing out the grandstand cheering them on to victory, waving Union Jacks and generally being supportive?

So it was that on the Saturday morning, a motorcycling crowd (okay,18) descended on the Eurotunnel. Two nearly didn’t make it, tugged on the M20 for doing lots over 70 and sporting ‘Not for Road Use’ on their extra loud can. Respect to Kent’s finest for not nicking our strays, although ample cleavage and fluttering lashes may have played a part...

We chose the Bikers Loft, between Ostend and Bruges for accommodation. Set the GPS to ‘avoid motorways’ and what you get is a 60 mile mystery tour of back roads, farm tracks, small towns and canal paths – brilliant! This is a unique hotel and a must for any biker passing through Belgium. Where else can you park your bike outside your bedroom door, drink metres of Stella into the early hours and pretend to be a pole dancing queen?

There are many delights within a short ride of the hotel, including the beautiful medieval city of Bruges which is famous for its chocolate, lace, canals and the world’s best chip van!
